Training Objectives
The Training Course for Directors of Ignatian Spiritual Exercises aims to provide participants with the theoretical and practical tools to design and lead retreats according to the method of St. Ignatius of Loyola. In particular, the program:
- presents the essence, structure, and internal dynamics of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises;
- delves into the theological and spiritual foundation of the method;
- develops the skills needed to offer the Exercises to groups and individuals, adapting them to the contemporary sociocultural context without sacrificing their original effectiveness;
- promotes the ability for personal and communal accompaniment, training leaders capable of guiding moments of deep prayer and spiritual dialogue.
Structure and Duration
The course is delivered in a blended format, on-site and online. Lessons will be recorded and can also be reviewed asynchronously. The total duration is five intensive days.
Dates: Monday, September 8 to Friday, September 12, 2025
Schedule: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM (Friday ends at 1:00 PM)
Participants are also encouraged to take part in the “Ignatian Month” (August 3 – 29, 2026) to complete their formation by directly practicing the prayer journey.
Target audience and admission requirements
The course is open to seminarians, religious, pastoral workers, and laypeople interested in deepening their understanding of Ignatian spirituality and taking on the role of director or companion of the Spiritual Exercises.
No specific academic degrees are required, but a good knowledge of Italian and a basic personal prayer practice are preferred.
Acquired Competencies
At the end of the program, participants will be able to:
- Design an itinerary for the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises following the traditional stages (Principle and Foundation, Examen, Contemplation of the Mysteries, Rules for Discernment, Daily Colloquy);
- Conduct guided prayer sessions and sharing moments, providing personal spiritual accompaniment;
- Contextualize Ignatian content in diverse contemporary cultural and pastoral settings;
- Critically evaluate and adapt training materials to the needs of participants.
Final Assessment
No formal exam is scheduled. A Certificate of Participation will be awarded at the end of the intensive days. Distance learners may request postal delivery for an additional fee of €10.
