Structure
The Doctorate Program is structured in several stages, each with its own procedures and requirements. Here is a more detailed explanation:
Phase 1: Propaedeutic stage.
Objective: This stage verifies the candidate’s suitability to pursue a highly qualified research path.
Main activities:
- Completion of advanced studies.
- Writing a scientific article.
- Preparation of a research project.
Phase 2: Research stage
Purpose: This is a personalized study program through which the student continues his scientific training for research and teaching.
Main activities:
- Development of the research project presented in the propaedeutic stage.
- Deliver semester reports on the progress of the research.
- Possible inclusion in the academic life of the Faculty.
Phase 3: Thesis stage.
Purpose: This is a personalized study program through which the student completes his research, communicating the results by writing a thesis.
Main activities:
- Writing and submission of the thesis.
- Public defense of the thesis before a committee.
Procedure
The Third Cycle follows precise rules and procedures to guarantee the research’s quality. From selecting candidates to awarding the degree, each stage is carefully monitored and evaluated by the competent academic authorities.
- Admission and enrollment: The third cycle coordinator evaluates the applications for admission to the propaedeutic stage and submits the candidates to the Dean for admission. Accepted students proceed to the research stage and then to the thesis stage after enrollment, according to the university’s regulations.
- Evaluation and promotion: The third cycle committee evaluates the student’s record at each stage of the course, deciding whether to promote the student to the next stage or to request changes or additions to the work.
- Research director and thesis reviewer: Each student has a research director and a thesis reviewer, both appointed by the Dean, who guide and evaluate the student’s work.
- Defense of the thesis and award of the degree: After the defense of the thesis before the Board of Examiners, the student receives the degree of “Doctor” once all the formalities and requirements have been fulfilled.
