Revelation, Hermeneutics, and Doctrinal Development in Joseph Ratzinger

Gagliardi_Ratzinger

Focusing on his extensive theological output—thus excluding the magisterial teachings delivered as Supreme Pontiff—this volume outlines the thought of Joseph Ratzinger (1927–2022) on Revelation and its interpretation. The study traces his thought in chronological order, starting from the 1955 Habilitation thesis dedicated to Saint Bonaventure’s concept of Revelation, highlighting a clear understanding of Ratzinger’s vision on Scripture and Tradition, on the Magisterium and theology, as well as on faith and its transmission today. The reflections of the Bavarian theologian are particularly interesting both in themselves and when applied to the currently relevant topic of synodality. They leave the field open to further developments, in-depth studies, and clarifications. The essay concludes with a reflection on doctrinal development based on Ratzinger’s theology of Revelation.
