Testimony on my service in Haiti (by Fr. Joseph Baselais)

Testimony on my service in Haiti (by Fr. Joseph Baselais)

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, allow me to thank you sincerely once for your incomparable economic and financial support. I share with you my motivation for studying Bioethics and what I have as a project after this study.

Reason:

Normally, if it is true that Bioethics is a young discipline, it is even younger in Haiti. Talking about bioethics concretely in the country, in fact, is a novelty. The Haitian population has no knowledge of Bioethics, as to date there is nothing concrete. There is a lack of ethical value in Haitian society. Families have resigned. Society is weakened. There are many crimes of blood on the population, especially with the political, economic and social situation that generates so much insecurity and crime. Human life is trivialized, we are ready to transform human into commodity in the way we consider it. A year ago the government took a decree to amend the Constitution and adopt another Penal Code in which abortion, euthanasia, marriage for all are legalized, just to name a few.

Objectives set

As a very authentic Catholic Christian, graduated in philosophy and theology, I had the opportunity to do internships in different dioceses and parishes of the country during which I approached people, especially young people and families through conferences, meetings, workshops. I also taught philosophy and religious science at a Catholic school in the diocese of Hinche. My dream is to see how:

  • Increase bioethics awareness in people by educating them to ethical values
  • Always work to protect and safeguard life
  • Encourage ethical behaviour in the action of health workers, in particular doctors
  • Make families aware of their responsibilities
  • Also promote medicine at the service of man, etc.

How to do it

  • Organize study days and reflection on bioethics in universities.
  • Organize debates and exchange on sensitive issues through dioceses, parishes, groups.
  • Use the press, social networks, radio…
  • Propose medical ethics and medical deontology as fundamental teachings in the curriculum of different medical faculties.
  • Regularly organize seminars for doctors on ethical issues.
  • The codes of international bioethics, how to apply them in the Haitian reality both at the health, family, social, etc.

To make the interdisciplinarity of Bioethics effective and given the lack of human resources in the country, after this study in Bioethics, I would like to make a license in Anthropological Philosophy in order to counteract some difficulties such as academic (human resources)technical, technological, financial…

Being truly satisfied and grateful for your support, and always hoping to find it for the future, I beg you dear responsible people to believe in my highest considerations and my humblest prayers for your missions.
