Introduzione

St Thomas's STh remained incomplete with regard to eschatology, hence the need to refer to his other works in order to find Aquinas's mature thinking on certain topics. This course analyses some texts from his theological works (SCG, Commentaries on Scripture, Comp. Theol., etc.) to trace Aquinas's thought on three important eschatological topics and show their relevance today: 1. Incarnation-Parousia, report on the appropriateness and purpose of both comings of Christ: continuity and complementarity. 2. Visio or fruitio? Analysis of selected texts by Aquinas on bliss as the ultimate goal to be achieved (visio), in comparison with other texts on eternal life already achieved (visio, possessio, fruitio, resurrection, blessed company, renewal of the material cosmos). 3. Hell in Aquinas' works as “extreme misery”, especially the relationship between the evil of guilt and its consequences: hardening of the heart (darkness, despair and hatred), with the evil of punishment (God's mercy and justice).
