It was a beautiful and bright morning, the 16
th of October 2014, the first time ever setting foot on the hallowed grounds of Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum. Two realities immediately welcomed me, first, the elegant simplicity of the architecture, revealing a genius of space management, and secondly, the mission and vision of the Athenaeum.
“The Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum is dedicated to the education of Christian leaders and evangelisers from both the clergy and the laity, who will give witness to the mystery of Christ in the service of the Church. It seeks to imbue society with the spirit of the Gospel by creating and promoting Christian lines of thought in harmony with the teachings of the Catholic Church that will enable humankind to address its deepest theoretical and existential challenges.” I was no less touched from these words, and through my stay, which lasted 5 years, that day remained and still remains with me.
Studying in a different country, with a different language , is not a walk in the park, it is like beginning from kindergarten, because you needed to build from the basics; but this is where APRA stands out and by APRA, I mean the people therein, and not the structure (albeit non-exclusive).
While watching the lips’ movement of the professor (since I understood nothing in Italian), a legionary brother walked up to me and willingly, gracefully and angelically offered to take notes in English so that I could follow. That simple gesture, alongside those of the other brothers and sisters whose friendship made all the difference was enough to neutralize all other turbulent times I had in the Athenaeum. Indeed, the wordings “
education of Christian leaders” was made manifest.
My exposure to a very intense theological (at baccalaureate level) and bioethical study (at Licentiate level) has prepared me for a future, which requires a lot of testimony. In my native Nigerian country these exposures, which APRA availed me, would go a long way in making me useful to the local Church and the general Nigerian public bringing valid and objective international contributions of the particular areas of my studies
interalia. All of this is reinforced by the disposition to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, which is an admirable, and important characteristic of the formation availed at APRA.
The nexus between faith and reason as a methodology for investigating the Divinely revealed truth does not suggest that formation in APRA is restrictive to the theological ambience only, rather it is safe to say that, employing the same methodology cited above, there is no jeopardy of a holistic formation, which makes anyone who passes through APRA capable of making positive, rational and valid differences in any scenario he/she finds him/herself.
The proficient and quintessential team of professors, the steadily updated environment of learning, the warm rapport between academic and non-academic staff are also great assets worthy of mention.
It has been a privilege being educated in APRA, and May God bless all those who in myriad of ways make APRA a befitting ground for education.
