Introduzione
Taking Luke's text as a basis, New Testament passages recounting the institution of the Eucharist will be studied (Lk 22:19-20; Mt 26:26-28; Mk 14:22-24; 1 Co 11:23-26). Luke's account is longer than the parallel texts of Matthew and Mark. This greater expanse is due to the fact that Luke reports several of Jesus' words of ecclesiological content, such as the role of the apostles in the Church, particularly Peter, in clear relation to the Eucharist and the priesthood, both of which were instituted that same evening. Moreover, Luke's text shows more than the others that the institution of the Eucharist and the New Testament priesthood occur during the celebration of the Jewish Passover supper, which will be replaced by the Eucharistic rite, just as the New Testament priesthood will replace the ancient priesthood. Finally, Luke's account emphasizes more than the others the sacrificial value of the Eucharistic rite and of Jesus' own passion and death, which is present, however, in all the narratives. Methodologically, we follow the main guidelines given by the Pontifical Biblical Commission in the third part of the document "The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church" (1993): the exegete must take into account the historical character of biblical revelation, the canonical set of sacred books, the Christological scope of the texts and the special relationship between the Bible and the Church. This is especially important when studying texts that refer to the Eucharist, the center of Christian life, since since the earliest days of the Church they have been used liturgically, handed down in a fixed way and interpreted by the Magisterium. The methodological approach is a synchronic one.
