Introduction

The proposed course studies the phenomenon of self-consciousness in its relation to the human person, based on the contributions to the topic by a number of important exponents of the 20th century. Philosophical concerns around the concept of the person arise in the medieval context involving the notions of rationality, relationality and dignity (cf. Thomas Aquinas interpreted by Putallaz). With modernity – beginning with Cartesian rationalism and Lockean empiricism (cf. Parfit) – the role of self-consciousness (cf. Heidegger) and then operative autonomy (cf. Sartre) in the constitution of personhood is emphasized. Some authors in the 20th century have tried to recapture the notion of “person” by emphasizing – not without risk of exaggeration – its essential relationality (Buber, Lévinas, de Finance), and transcendent intentionality (Lotz, Norris Clarke). There are also figures who draw specific attention to corporeality (Merleau-Ponty) and existentiality (Fabro) in the constitution of personality. The course invites students to make their own synthesis on the notion of “person” that integrates the points discussed.
