Class beginning dates

Introduction

The seminar focuses on The Social Contract or Principles of Political Law by J. J. Rousseau. The topics covered include the nature and limits of freedom, civil society and its structure, the concept of the social contract, the rights of the governed people, the general will, the common good, laws, and the advantages and disadvantages of democratic states. Together, these elements illustrate the author’s anthropological-political proposal. The seminar will compare Rousseau’s proposals with the content of the institutional courses of the bachelor’s degree and the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.
