Introduction

The course aims to investigate the essence and contemporary relevance of the spirituality, worship, and devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the study of the evolution of Sacred Heart spirituality over the past centuries and the evaluation of its potential in today’s pastoral ministry. In particular, it will seek to shed light on the presence and role of the spirituality of the Sacred Heart in the spiritual proposal of the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi.

Students are to choose a spiritual author or a particular topic to delve into. Figures to consider include, for example, St. John Eudes, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Jean Croiset, Blessed Bernardo de Hoyos, Marie-Joseph Coudrin, Henri Ramière SJ, St. Maria Josefa of the Heart of Jesus, St. Charles de Foucauld, Leo Dehon, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, Maria Consolata Betrone, Mateo Crawley-Boevey, Luis María Martínez, and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Additionally, various papal encyclicals on the Sacred Heart are to be revisited. Finally, texts from the Regnum Christi family tradition may be studied.
