Introduction
The aim of this course is to introduce students to a brief exegetical-theological study of Mark 14:61-62.
Jesus’ response to Caiaphas in Mk 14:62 appears to be a formal declaration and a clear revelation of intimate aspects of Jesus’ identity. It is preceded by a solemn question from the High Priest, who seeks to know this identity in a dramatic manner. From this question-and-answer exchange, many scholars have considered the verse as a Christological climax of the Gospel of Mark.
The course will focus on investigating the exegetical issues that allow us to speak of a ‘Christological climax’ of the Gospel, including an exegetical analysis of the context in Mark and the implicit references found in this verse.
Following this, there will be a more theological study of the Christological implications that can be deduced from Jesus’ declaration, as well as the consequences for the presentation of the entire mystery of the Messiah and divine sonship in the Gospel of Mark.
