Academic Year 2024-2025
Semester
II Semestre
Class beginning dates

Introduction
The objective of the course is to offer a sufficiently in-depth overview of the philosophical, ethical, and anthropological issues related to biology and biotechnology, in light of the development of humanity’s great technoscientific endeavor. The course will avoid, on one hand, the technophobic extremes of radical environmentalism, and on the other, the technocratic and scientistic euphoria. Elements of “theoretical biology” will be provided, exploring the concepts of life, living organisms, and symbiosis. The course will also analyze the developments in biotechnology and genetics, balancing hopes that are worthy of humanity with the dehumanizing “religion of health,” which seeks to eliminate the sick in the pursuit of defeating disease. Finally, the concept of technoethics will be explored, recognizing, as JosĆ© Maria Galvan states, that “man is technological by nature.”
