BIOO 2146

An Analysis of the Oxford Transhumanists

Bioetica

Academic Year 2025-2026

Semester

II Semestre

Class beginning dates

16/04/2026

Introduction

The course gives an overview of the most influential thinkers of the Oxford school of transhumanism, namely those bioethicists who have collaborated within the University of Oxford to provide a philosophical foundation for the transhumanist outlook. The course provides a historical background to contemporary thinkers and highlights those traditions of thought that converge in their work. It also proposes a methodology for constructive dialogue with the movement. In particular, the course contends that the Thomistic tradition of natural law virtue ethics can assimilate the positive aspects of the Oxford thinkers and offer a helpful corrective to some of their limitations. While the course will offer a primarily philosophical analysis, it will also introduce possible avenues of dialogue between the Oxford thinkers and the Catholic moral theological tradition.
