The Bachelor of Theology is a first-cycle academic program that offers a comprehensive and organic theological education, introducing students to the scientific methodology of theological research. The program is structured to ensure an in-depth knowledge of Catholic doctrine, enabling students to expound it clearly and engage effectively with the contemporary world.
Educational Objectives
The Bachelor of Theology provides a solid and interdisciplinary theological education, based on Sacred Scripture, Church Tradition, and the Magisterium. The program aims to develop skills for the critical and systematic analysis of Catholic doctrine, fostering dialogue with contemporary culture and other religious traditions.
Students acquire the tools to expound and transmit the faith with clarity, thus preparing future ministers, educators, and pastoral workers. Furthermore, the program offers an academic foundation for teaching Catholic religion, theological research, and other ecclesial and social services. The approach integrates faith and reason, promoting a theological reflection capable of responding to the challenges of the current world.
Structure and Duration
The course has a total duration of five years, divided into:
- Introductory philosophical biennium (120 ECTS) in collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy;
- Theological triennium (180 ECTS) for in-depth study of fundamental theological disciplines.
Students who possess the Certificate of philosophical-theological studies carried out in a Major Seminary or another approved Higher Institute may be admitted to the First Cycle, taking into account the studies already completed and, depending on the case, possibly providing supplementary courses and exams.
Admission Requirements
The program is open to priests, seminarians, religious, and lay people. To access the first cycle, students must possess:
- a qualification that allows access to university studies in their own country;
- demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the Italian language (minimum level B1 CEFR);
- present a certificate of moral conduct.
Furthermore, to access the theological triennium directly, a solid philosophical preparation is required, verifiable through the possession of a Bachelor of Philosophy or the completion of an equivalent philosophical biennium.
Acquired Skills
The Bachelor of Theology confers an academic preparation that complies with the standards of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), allowing access to:
- Licentiate in Theology and other advanced programs of ecclesiastical studies;
- Teaching of Catholic religion (after acquiring the required pedagogical credits).
Final Exams
At the end of the first cycle, the student must pass the comprehensive exam, which will focus on the main dogmatic and moral subjects present in the “Tesario per lāesame complessivo del primo ciclo” (Thesaurus for the comprehensive exam of the first cycle).
