Introduction

Philosophical theology is the culmination part of metaphysics, leading the latter, through the resolutio secundum rem and an application of Pseudo-Dionysius’ triplex via, to the knowledge of the ultimate extrinsic cause of ens qua ens, that is, God as Ipsum Esse Subsistens. The introduction sets out “the God problem” in the history of philosophy as well as the nature, method and limits of philosophical theology. The course systematically deals with three basic problems: (1) demonstrating the existence of God as the ultimate extrinsic cause of ens qua ens; (2) knowing (analogically) the nature of God and his intrinsic and operative attributes; and (3) explaining the relationship between God and other beings. Although the development of the subject follows a Thomist itinerary, insights from current debates will be incorporated.
