Introduction

One of the great philosophers of the Middle Ages is undoubtedly Anselm d’Aosta (1033-1109) who, besides being prior and bishop, has played a fundamental role in the formation of philosophical thought and in the history of philosophy up to the present day. Authors like Henry of Ghent, Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, Alexander of Hales, Duns Scotus, Descartes, Gassendi, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Karl Barth, Plantinga — all these great thinkers are indebted, to a large extent, to Anselmo’s thought and method of argumentation, although with different and sometimes opposing outcomes. In this course, teacher and students will read and translate together both a part of VitaAnselmiwritten by Eadmer, one of Anselm’s students, and the text of Monologium itself, where Anselm undertakes an ambitious intellectual challenge, in which he masterfully combines faith and reason (fides quaerens intellectum); Anselm wants to demonstrate the ways of access to the knowledge of God. With each translated passage, the teacher will offer a brief philosophical commentary.
