The course aims to deepen the History of the Shroud of Turin through an analysis of the various issues concerning this complex subject from a religious and historical perspective. The issue related to the correct method of studying the Shroud will be addressed in a dedicated lecture, followed by an overview of the hypotheses regarding the history of the Shroud prior to the 14th century (the period when the first documented historical accounts of it appeared) and the events that have characterized the history of the Shroud from the 14th century onwards, with particular attention to the moment when the Cloth officially appeared in Europe. The final lectures will focus on more specific historical topics, such as the peculiar forms of devotion that have been associated with the Shroud at certain historical moments, the question of the position of Jesus’ burial cloths according to the Gospel descriptions, the issue of the scourge that is believed by scholars to have been used to flog the Man of the Shroud, the relationship between the Shroud and Christ’s iconography, and devotion to the Shroud in the Eastern world.
