Introduction

Canon Law, as specified in the Apostolic Constitution Sacrae Disciplinae Leges, represents for the faithful a theological deepening of the visible structure of the Church as the People of God, where relationships among the faithful are regulated according to justice, based on charity, and aimed at safeguarding souls. Beginning with the equality of the faithful, the course focuses on the rights and duties that define the figure of the christifideles in light of the documents of the Second Vatican Council. A key area of study is the hierarchical constitution of the Church: the Roman Pontiff and the Roman Curia, the Bishops and particular Churches, the Clergy, and Parishes. Additionally, the course highlights and provides a legal framework for the Church’s teaching function—with particular reference to the teaching of Catholic Religion in schools—and its sanctifying function, with special emphasis on certain Sacraments. A brief mention is also given to administrative procedures and the process of nullity of canonical marriage.
