Presentation: the Holy Father has revoked canon 230 through the Motu proprio Spiritus Dominis. As Institute on Women, we do not want to enter into the debate on the female ministerial priesthood, which has been clearly settled by the Magisterium. However, it is timely to reflect on the role of women in the liturgy: their visibility or invisibility. The Pope's decision puts on the table the opportunity to reflect on some issues:
- What does the Spiritus Dominis mean? Does it raise hope or disappointment?
- The Pope talks about the context that made it convenient to reserve lay ministries only to men. To what extent is it appropriate for the Church to adapt to cultural contexts and traditions? To what extent should it be prophetic in its relation to culture?
- Does the liturgy reflect the choral praise of God by people made up of men and women?
- An element of the history of Israel comes to light: the woman in Israel is above all a prophet and a ruler, but not a priestess, despite the fact that this role was also common for women in surrounding towns. What will God want to tell us in this story?
