Semester

Class beginning dates

Introduction

The Faith and Reason course, in the last semester of the Baccalaureate in Philosophy program in an ecclesiastical faculty, seeks to stimulate a personal and applied synthesis of the philosophical system achieved in harmony with one’s religious beliefs and commitments. The first part of the course will illustrate the different historical contexts in which the problem of the relationship between “reason” and “faith” has emerged. The second part of the course will develop in more detail different models of the relationship between faith and reason, arriving at a synthetic view of this relationship. In particular, it will address the question of the autonomy and limits of different modes of knowledge, as well as their unity, complementarity, circularity, and interdisciplinarity. The third part of the course challenges students to critically apply their own model of the relationship between faith and reason to the solution of several contemporary speculative and practical problems: the meaning of time and history, prophecy and interpretation, Christianity and political pluralism, Christianity and the affective world (interpersonal love, art, technology, culture).
