Introduction

Hans Urs von Balthasar is considered among the leading Catholic theologians of the 20th century, author of a vast scholarly output. His most important work is entitled Gloria. A Theological Aesthetics, written in the years 1961-1969, it consists of seven volumes. The course will present an overview of this great thinker. The different “ecclesiastical styles” mentioned by von Balthasar can, moreover, help to form one’s own theological style. An analysis of the metaphysics of the modern era provides a better understanding of the main challenges to faith and reveals the foundations of von Balthasar’s theology. For him, the glory of God is manifested for man in the Old and New Covenant that find their culmination in Jesus Christ, in Laudem Gloriae. This is also a useful insight from the perspective of the new evangelization.
