There are two major themes or thematic modules in this course: the Church in history and its external relations; and the Church internally. In the first, topics such as teaching, relationships with political powers, and the Crusades will be studied. In the second, ecclesiology, the East-West Schism, religious movements and heresies (including the response of the Bishop of Rome to the problem and thus the birth of the Inquisition), spirituality, and the development of religious life (starting from the ancient period) will be examined. The third module, smaller because it will be covered in just three hours, focuses on Historiography, presenting both that written during the medieval period and modern and contemporary historiography that has approached medieval history with ideological and non-ideological purposes.
