Introduction
This is an introductory course to the Shroud of Turin, presenting general elements of Shroud studies: an overview and a description of the Shroud, its history, scientific research across various fields, current conservation methods, its relationship with Christian faith, and different ways to teach and disseminate it. The course targets clergy, laity, professors, researchers, journalists, and anyone else looking to deepen their understanding of Shroud studies through an interdisciplinary approach. The first half of the course, taught by Prof. Bruno Barberis, comprises eight lessons as follows: 1) Description of the Imprints and Traces Visible on the Shroud. 2) Brief History of the Shroud 3) History of the Scientific Research on the Shroud. I 4) History of the Scientific Research on the Shroud. II 5) The Preservation of the Shroud 6) The Shroud and the Gospels 7) Shroud, Science and Faith 8) How to Explain and Teach the Shroud. The second part of the course (9 units), taught by Fr. Joseph Spence, dedicates a lesson to Shroud basics, mainly concerning various textile aspects of the Shroud linen; an overall view of the History of the Shroud; with particular attention to the various moments of the Way of the Cross, especially the Burial of Jesus, based on Shroud data; and a final glimpse at the topic “Shroud and Evangelization”, as lived by Msgr. Giulio Ricci and Mother Maria Elisabetta Patrizi, Founders of the “Roman Center of Sindonology”.
