Introduction
The course includes a systematic study of the sacraments of Penance and the Unction of the Sick, from a dogmatic, liturgical, and pastoral perspective. They constitute the group of sacraments of healing and are intended to heal the weaknesses of the “homo viator.” Regarding the sacrament of Penance, we will explore its biblical foundation, then take a brief historical tour and examine the evolution of its practice, highlighting problems and issues raised throughout the ages.
Particular attention will be paid to the doctrine of the Second Vatican Council and more contemporary issues; then to the current Ordo and the specific approach to the practice of indulgences.
Regarding the Unction of the Sick, we will begin with an overview of the Christian view of illness and death. We will then undertake a biblical study, with special attention to the rite described in the Letter of James, and then a historical one, seeking an explicit and systematic affirmation of the sacramentality of the anointing. Finally, we will conclude with a systematic treatment of the sacrament, with particular attention to the most recent magisterial documents.
