Systematic study of the sacraments of penance and unction of the sick from the dogmatic and liturgical point of view. They form the group of healing sacraments, which come to the aid of the weaknesses of the “homo viator”. Regarding penance, we will seek its biblical foundation, and then make a historical journey to see the evolution of practice and, along the way, the different theoretical reflections will come out according to the problems and issues that each era has highlighted more. Special attention will be deserved by the doctrine of Vatican II and the most current themes, such as the current “Ordo” and the way of considering the practice of indulgences. As for the unction of the sick, we will begin with a reference to the Christian vision of illness and death. Then we will first undertake a biblical journey, with special attention to the rite described in the letter of James, then historical, in search of the explicit and systematic affirmation of the sacramentality of the unction. We will conclude with a systematic discussion of the sacrament, with special attention to the most recent magisterial documents.
