Introduction

Starting from the fundamental anthropological question: Who is man?, the course explores the deep existential meaning in a movement “from below,” that is, from the “horizontality” of the first-person experience of living and feeling, towards the “above,” in the direction of the “verticality” that grasps the meaning of knowing, thinking, understanding, desiring, willing, choosing, loving, and experiencing pain and happiness. All human dimensions are lived in a relational context; the human being is in contact with others, in a world that surrounds and shapes them, immersed in space-temporality. From concrete, tangible, visible knowledge rooted in the sensory world that surrounds them, the human being has the peculiarity of transcending all this, opening up to a dimension that surpasses them, that exceeds them even though, at the same time, it comprehends them. By grasping the deep essence of man, who discovers himself as a “person,” the course aims to provide the conceptual and methodological tools to reflect on oneself and come to recognize oneself: beings rooted in the horizon of this world, shaped by matter and temporality, beings who transcend this horizon and are imbued with spirituality.
