This course aims to present some essential elements of moral theology that are foundational to bioethics. According to a key figure in the renewal of moral theology (Servais Pinckaers), moral theology “is that part of theology which studies human acts in order to direct them toward a loving vision of God seen as our true, complete happiness and ultimate end. This vision is achieved through grace, virtues and gifts [of the Spirit], in the light of revelation and reason.” The course traces the historical development of moral theology, with particular attention to developments that have led to a renewal of the discipline in the 20th and 21st centuries. The course will also offer a systematic presentation of the main elements of such renewed moral theology.
