We come to the 2nd meeting of the #WebinarAPRA designed to explore issues of great interest and urgency in today's society. The second meeting will address the issue of the dignity of the person in situations of extreme fragility focusing on:
- "Bioethics death and immortality, towards today's society" (a topic that will be addressed and further explored in the upcoming Summer Course on Bioethics from July 4-8) - The Supreme Court of the United States Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision declared that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion and has overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade and the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey rulings. Each of the fifty states is now left to make its own abortion legislation. Roughly half of the countryâs states favor restrictions on abortion, while the other half look to permit the practice.Program
Fr. Michael Baggot, Assistant Professor of Bioethics at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum, will interview Charles Camosy, Professor of Medical Humanities at the Creighton University School of Medicine, regarding what the ruling means for pre-born children, economically vulnerable women, those who suffer ectopic pregnancies, and health care for all members of society. Baggot and Camosy will also discuss how to enter into a dialogue about one of the worldâs most polarizing issues. The two will explore how the consistent life ethic developed in Camosyâs book Resisting Throwaway Culture: How a Consistent Life Ethic Can Unite a Fractured People provides a framework for understanding abortion that defies widespread misconceptions about the supposed negative effects of Dobbs. In particular, they will draw on the insights from Camosyâs latest work, Losing our Dignity: How Secularized Medicine Is Undermining Fundamental Human Equality, to analyze how the notion of fundamental human dignity shapes medical care for vulnerable patients at the start and the end of their life. This will be followed by:- Prof. Stefano Semplici: "The pursuit of immortality: emerging technologies and anthropological issues"
